Professor, Shinshu University School of Medicine
Yoshimitsu Fukushima graduated from Hokkaido University School of Medicine in 1977. After his pediatric residency, he began his clinical genetics training at Hokkaido University and Kanagawa Children’s Medical Center. In 1985, he was appointed to a chief physician at the Clinical Genetics Division of Saitama Children’s Medical Center (SCMC). From 1986 to 1988, he was engaged in gene mapping research at the Roswell Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo, New York. In 1995 he was selected as a professor at Shinshu University School of Medicine and established the first clinical genetics section as an in-hospital measure in Japan. The Clinical Genetics Section became the official department of the university hospital approved by the Ministry of Education in 2000, and he became the first department head. At Shinshu University, he served as Vice President (2011-2013), Dean of the School of Medicine (2011-2014), and became an emeritus professor in 2017. He is still conducting research and education in the field of Medical Genetics and Bioethics/Research Integrity. In academic activities, he has served as the President of the Japan Society of Human Genetics(2011-2014), the President of the Japanese Society for Genetic Counseling (2009-2013), the President of the Japanese Society for gene diagnosis and therapy (2009-2013), and the President of the National Liaison Council for clinical sections of Medical Genetics (2003-2020). As one of the presidents, he held the 13th International Congress of Human Genetics in 2016. He was awarded the Japan Society of Human Genetics Contribution Award in 2017. As of 2022, he is the chairman of the "Gene, Health and Society" Review Committee of the Japanese Association of Medical Sciences and a director of the Association for the Promotion of Research Integrity.
