Koji Okabayashi graduated from the University of Tokyo, Japan in 1995, and received a Ph.D. in Life Science from the University of Tokyo Graduate school of Arts and Sciences in 2000. He has over 20 years of research experience in various research institutes including the RIKEN Brain Science Institute, the University of Tokyo, and University of Tsukuba. He has spent most of his research career in the University of Tsukuba where he is an assistant professor and research manager, after working in the private company dealing with laboratory animals and contract research. His original research interests were in molecular mechanisms of embryonic development, stem cell differentiation, and synthetic biology. After working for less than two years in the private sector, his main research interests shifted to the areas of research management, research ethics, and research integrity. In recent years, he has been particularly focusing on research on educational systems to maintain the quality of research activities in the field of basic experimental sciences and to ensure integrity in the researchers’ behavior. Okabayashi is an assistant professor in charge of research integrity classes for graduate school students at the University of Tsukuba, and is responsible for research management at the Life Science Center for Survival Dynamics, Tsukuba Advanced Research Alliance (TARA) in the University. He also currently serves as an advisor on research integrity for the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) while serves as a member of the Biomedical Science Subcommittee in the Association for the Promotion of Research Integrity (APRIN), Japan.
