Chie Hikasa received Juris Doctor from Sophia Law School in 2013. After working as a contract researcher at the Institute for the study of Humanities and Social Sciences, Doshisha University, a contract researcher at the Institute of Comparative Law in Japan, Chuo University, and a project assistant professor at Institute of innovation for future society, Nagoya University, she was appointed as an assistant professor at Shinshu University School of Medicine in 2021. She specializes in medical law, especially bioethics, and her research focuses on patients' right of self-determination. For example, she conducts research on the legal justification of withdrawing life-sustaining treatment and legal issues arising from the use of AI in medical care. She is also a visiting research fellow at APRIN, where she is involved in developing educational materials of research ethics for researchers and promoting research ethics education. She takes recently an active interest in human subject protection, personal information protection, and informed consent.
